JR WARD WINS THOMPSON RACEWAYS GASSER REUNION!

WINNERS

Over the past weekend, the Nostalgia AA/Gassers, presented by Summit Racing Equipment, made their way back to Thompson Raceway Park in Thompson, Ohio for the first time in four years for their historic Gasser Reunion. The club ran their Heads Up, All Out, No Index format in a “Chicago Style” shootout which delivered the quickest and fastest racing on the property. Gasser legend “Ohio” George Montgomery was also on hand as the Grand Marshall of the event.

Six of the quickest and fastest period correct AA/GAS cars in the world made the trip including special guest Justus Daniel in his 1951 Henry J who ran a best qualifying time of 5.29 ET at 131 MPH; “Motoring” Michael Campolucci driving the “Code Blue” 1933 Willys coupe owned by Larry Morton who turned in a best qualifying time of 5.03 ET at 138 MPH; Al Jr. driving the “Caged Heat” 1933 Willys coupe owned by his father “Double A” Al Niespodzinski clicking off a best qualifying time of 5.12 ET at 134 MPH; John Foust driving his brand new 1940 Willys coupe ran a qualifying best time of 5.14 ET at 136 MPH on only his third run on the new car; Tim Irwin in his 1948 Anglia “Crazy Man’s Toy” ran a best qualifying time of 5.33 ET at 130 MPH and defending club champion Jr. Ward, driving the “Junkyard Dog” 1934 Willys sedan owned and tuned by Jim Oddy turned in the #1 qualifying time of 4.95 ET at 140 MPH.

The final round came down to long-time rivals Jr Ward and Michael Campolucci under an overcast sky about to pour down rain. The two teams quickly turned their cars around after the last qualifier and we’re ready to do battle in front of the packed house of fans that truly showed their appreciation for these cars while making their way past them down the return road after each run. Both cars left hard with Campolucci taking the starting line advantage but Ward quickly made up the real estate and took the win with his quickest run of the weekend stopping the clocks with a 4.91 ET at 142 MPH to Campolucci’s 5.06 ET at 139 MPH.

The Good Vibrations Motorsports “Best Reaction Time” winner was awarded to Al Niespodzinski Jr. who was the quickest throughout the event with a best reaction time of .084.

The club would like to send out a BIG THANK YOU to Thompson Raceway Park for inviting us to this special event, giving us a safe track to race on and even went out of their way to prepare the track surface before every run which enabled our cars to put down the horsepower and run the times that they did.

The club would also like to thank our gracious sponsors Summit Racing Equipment, Pro Racing Fuels, Abruzzi Transmissions & Converters, Gasser Wars Magazine, Auto Meter Competition Instruments, Moser Engineering, Mickey Thompson Performance Tires and Wheels, Fast Times Rods, Good Vibrations Motorsports, Ohio Crankshaft, Alkydigger, Lokar Performance Products, USA Performance Parts and Richard Moore for their continued support! Members and fans, please remember to support our sponsors as they support us racers!
