The Nostalgia AA/Gassers are proud to present John Foust’s recently completed 1940 Willys Coupe “Lazarus”, built and painted at his own John’s Hot Rod Barn in Volant, Pennsylvania and fresh out of the paint booth! It has been about three years since John Foust and his family’s “Skid Row Racing” team asked the club’s official photographer and very talented artist Martin Thoene to design a paint scheme for Lazarus, in which Martin obliged and eventually helped create a piece of art. John’s amazing painting talent and interpretation of Martins design has taken the car to a different level, as the paint has all sorts of depths and subtleties that will surely be a photographer magnet.

The whole concept of the car was to encapsulate the 1969 era of Gasser Racing. The car’s body design and paint style include several influences from the latter part of the “Gasser Wars” era, which will not escape serious gasser fans, yet it has a unique identity all its own. John’s fiancé and racing partner Roslyn Black was also a key factor in the elaborate caliber paint job. She was the driving force behind the colors, lace, and amazing gold-leaf sign-writing, which was the icing on the cake. Roslyn, who often goes by Roz, was the one mainly responsible for the car becoming what it is, as John was just going to paint the car black with some flake. She helped with the huge amount of masking required and also sourced the period correct skull lace, which gave Martin’s already amazing design another twist. It’s no wonder she had a smile ear to ear when the car was rolled out into the sunshine for the very first time. When asked about the final turnout of the paint job, John humbly took no credit and said, “Martin made it visual and Roz made it happen.”

A big thank you and credit for the photos also goes to Bob Wenzelburger who was a huge help as Martin was out of commission due to a recent surgery. Martin did however add his editing magic to the photos for that awesome finishing touch.

Thanks to Don Moyer, “Lazarus” is set to debut at the “Hot Rod Asylum” show within a show at the 2018 Summit Racing Equipment Piston Power Auto-Rama on March 16 – 18 at the I-X Center in Cleveland, Ohio. John will also have official club t-shirts for sale so don’t forget to stop by and say hello to Skid Row Racing!
